Planning a big family get-together for the 4th of July? If so, you'll need to have some activities planned and fun things to do, even for the little kids. Simple coloring books that are themed to the 4th of July will keep them occupied for awhile. Using the free printable coloring pages offered by Mom's Break and The Craft Cafe, you can make enough coloring books so that each child will have his or her own coloring book.

Just be prepared...all of those young Rembrandts will want you to put their artwork on the 'frig!

Step 1.

Download free printable 4th of July coloring pages, such as the ones shown here that can be found at Mom's Break 4th of July.

You'll need:

  • Free printable coloring pages
  • A 3-hole punch or a handheld hole punch
  • Curl ribbon (shown here), string, or yarn
  • Scissors
  • Crayons

Step 2.

Create a front and back cover by printing one of the coloring pages on two pieces of card stock (shown in beige here), which is heavier paper than regular computer printing paper. Card stock is available in stores like Office Depot, and can often be found at Wal-Mart or Target. If you don't have card stock, then you can skip this part.

Print all of the free printable July 4th coloring pages on plain computer paper.

Assemble the coloring book:

  • A front cover, coloring image up (the military ribbon shown here)
  • The coloring pages, coloring image up (the white pages)
  • A back cover, coloring image down

Step 3.

This shows the back cover (firecracker holding a flag shown here).

Note that the coloring pages are all shown as coloring image down.

Step 4.

Punch the holes.

If you have a 3-hole punch, then set the holes at the same spacing as you would for a 3-ring binder (most 3-hole punches are preset to this spacing). If you are using a hand-held hole punch, then mark three holes, at about the same spacing as you would for a 3 ring binder.

  • Punch the holes in the cover (holes are along the left margin of the image, as shown here)
  • Punch holes in a few of the coloring pages at a time (or punch each page separately, if using a hand-held punch), continue until all pages are punched
  • Punch holes in the back cover (holes are along the right margin of the image)

Step 5.

This shows the holes punched in the front cover. Note that the holes are punched along the left margin of the coloring image.

Step 6.

This shows holes being punched in the back cover. Note that the coloring image is down so that the holes will be along the right margin when the coloring book is assembled.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 7.
Assemble the coloring book:
  • Front cover, image up
  • Coloring pages, image up
  • Back cover, image down
Step 8.
Tie the coloring book together:
  • Use strands of curl ribbon (red, white, and blue shown here)
  • Slip the strands through the top hole
  • Trim to leave about 8 inches of ribbon
  • Tie the curl ribbon so that it is loose enough to allow the coloring book to lay open, flat on the table.
Step 11.
If you have the time, why not wrap the coloring book and crayons? That way, each child gets to open a present!
As shown here, the coloring book is wrapped in tissue paper covered with silver stars. The crayons are wrapped separately (and stuck to the tissue-covered coloring book with a donut of tape).
Red, white, blue, and gold curl ribbon make is a colorful gift!
This finishes making a 4th of July coloring book.
For older kids, you might want to have colored markers or colored pencils on hand.
