Hostess gifts are fun to put together and are even more fun to give! Imagine the delighted look on your Thanksgiving Day dinner hostess's face when you surprise her with a colorful gift bag that says "Thanks for having us over." Even if your hostess is your mom, sister, or even your brother---give a gift that says "Thanks."

Everything used for this Hostess Gift was purchased at a "dollar store" (I just love to shop around dollar stores!), except for the pouch of flavored coffee (which I bought at my local market for less than $1). A hostess gift (or host gift) doesn't have to be expensive, but it sure can look like it!

You’ll need:

  • Gift items (mug and flavored coffee shown here as an example)
  • Fall decoration (artificial “pick” of Fall-colored leaves)
  • Gift bag, tissue paper, curl ribbon
  • Gift tags (you can download as free printables, see below for the link)
  • Scissors, hole punch

Use tissue paper to loosely wrap the gift items.

By using a gift bag (instead of a box), you don't have to really "wrap" the gift. One or two sheets of colorful tissue paper create a gift package that has delightful "eye appeal"!

(Wrap breakable items a little more carefully. I keep bubble-wrap on hand. It is fairly inexpensive and can be purchased at office supply stores such as Office Depot.)

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Use one or two sheets of tissue paper to “line” the gift bag, insert gift item(s). Insert Fall decoration item (so that it sticks out of the top of the bag).
Use two different colors of tissue paper if you don't have a Fall pick. This will add color and pizzazz to your hostess gift!
Punch a hole in the top left corner of a gift tag. Write a small “Thank you” sentiment on the tag.
For the free gift tags, go to:
The gift tags are printed on blank business cards. See the accompanying article (link at top of this page) for more information about using business cards as gift tags.
Use lengths of curl ribbon to tie gift tag onto handle of gift bag. Use scissor blade to curl the ribbon.
For "host" gifts, browse around your local dollar store for ideas! You can tuck two or more small "hardware" type items, or other "stuff men always use" stuff in the bag. Use muted colors of tissue paper, and you might want to eliminate the Fall pick---just to give it more of a "gift for a guy" look.
