Here's a fun and very colorful Christmas craft that will keep kids of all ages occupied for a few hours! Make Christmas ornaments using Christmas cookie cutters!  You can use the ornaments as actual tree ornaments, window decorations, or to tie onto Christmas gifts for Grandma! This craft can be made with very simple craft items, and is easy enough for very young children.

You'll need:

  • Christmas cookie cutters (shown here are cookie cutters purchased at Walgreens using a store coupon, 4-for-$1)
  • Poster board (or cardboard) and colored construction paper
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Glitter
  • Glue stick
  • Curl Ribbon
  • Scissors (kid-friendly scissors shown here), pencil, and a hole punch
First, trace around the cookie cutter with a pencil onto the poster board (or cardboard). The simple shapes are easiest for little kids, like the star, bell, and Christmas tree. The other shapes (snowman, horn, angel, Santa, and wooden soldier) are more intricate to trace, cut, and decorate. This makes them more suitable for older kids (or for Mommies to work on!).
Separate the ornaments, but don't actually trim them yet. Moms, it might be easier for you to do this if you are doing this craft with very young children.

By leaving some space around the traced outlines, it will be easier for kids to color and decorate.

Using crayons, markers or colored pencils, color and decorate the ornaments. Mom, it might be easier for young kids to decorate the ornaments if you have some pictures handy of Christmas bells, stars, and Christmas trees. For very young children, just allow them to have fun coloring!
You can use glitter to add to the decoration!

Place the ornament on a large piece of construction paper (or newspaper). Rub the glue stick wherever you want to glitter. Sprinkle glitter over the gluey area. Press lightly with your fingertips.

After a few moments, shake off the excess glitter onto the piece of paper. If you are saving glitter, you can use the piece of paper to "funnel" the glitter back into the glitter bottle.

Now, trim the ornament.
Use a hole punch to make a hole in the top of the ornament. Tie a loop of curl ribbon through the hole to create an ornament hanger.
You can "add" to the decoration by cutting out a piece of colored construction paper, just slightly larger than the ornament.

Mom, it might be easier for you to do this, freehand, when doing this craft with young children.

Run the glue stick along the back of the decorated ornament, and glue onto the construction paper. Make a hole in the top, and loop some curl ribbon through for the ornament hanger.

Make as many Christmas ornaments as you like! You can use them as window decorations, or you can string them together to make a garland (or banner) to hang in a doorway.
