You can use stamps and colored ink pads for lots of fun Christmas crafts! Here are just two ideas: make Christmas ornaments (that can also be used as window hangers) and decorate Christmas gift boxes (that are great for a small gift, such as a few Christmas candies or a votive candle).

Decorating Christmas ornaments is fun! This is a simple craft that even young kids can do! You can decorate the ornaments with stamps, just color them with crayons or markers, or even simply cover with glitter! The fun is in the crafting!

For this craft, as pictured here, you'll need:

  • Cardboard ornaments (I purchased these at Michael's Craft Store during a sale, priced at 79 cents each)
  • Christmas stamps (these are foam cubes, purchased at Michael's for about $1 each)
  • Ink pads (I purchased these at Michael's as well, at about $3 each)

Moms: If you have young children who will be doing this craft, you might want to think about covering the table with old newspaper and putting smocks on the kids (one of Dad's old T-shirts works just fine!). Stamping can get a little messy and smeary!

Choose the stamps you'd like to use to decorate the ornament.

Completely ink the entire surface of the stamp (that is, just the part that will make the picture).

Press the stamp firmly onto the ornament. Don't press too hard or the ink might have a tendency to smear.

It might be a good idea to practice stamping on a piece of blank computer paper or even a paper bag---until you get a feel for just how hard to press on the stamp.

You will need to allow sufficient time for the stamp ink to dry. You might want to test this by stamping a piece of cardboard or brown kraft paper a day or two ahead of time, and then test periodically so that you know how long it takes for the ink to dry.

I used a gold glitter pen to write the date on the ornament. You can personalize the ornament in any way that you like. Why not write your child's name on the back, along with the date. This makes a really fun memento to save through the years.
You can use the same stamps to decorate Christmas boxes. These boxes are fun to use to either give small gifts or to save protect keepsake ornaments.

As you see here, you'll need:

  • Paper craft box (I purchased this one at Michael's during a sale, cost: about $1)
  • Christmas stamps and colored ink pads
  • Tissue paper, ribbon, yarn, or twine'
  • Gift tag
  • Gift, optional (as shown here, Christmas candle and chocolate candies)
Layer the tissue paper in the box, and add the gift. Be sure to take the tag off whatever you are putting inside (as you can see here, the tag is being peeled off the bottom of the candle).

Of course, you can put anything desired in the box. These craft boxes comes in many different sizes and shapes---and make a nice way to keep Christmas mementos, keepsake ornaments, or to use as actual gift boxes.

Decorate the box lid with the stamps.
Add the gift tag and then tie ribbon, yarn, or twine around the box! It makes a fun gift, and is a departure from the traditional paper-wrapped gift box.
