"Brown paper packages, tied up with strings...these are
a few of my favorite things." (from The Sound of Music, lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein) It's easy to give your gift of a loaf of homemade bread a nostalgic look, harking back to the days of going to a hometown bakery to buy your daily loaf of freshly made bread. You'll need:

Wrap your loaf of bread to maintain freshness. See
Jan's Dough Tip #4 for helpful hints for wrapping loaves of homemade
bread. Measure and cut kraft paper so that you have enough to wrap the loaf of bread. (A brown paper shopping bag works fine, too---just cut the bottom out of the bag, and then wrap so that the plain brown inside of the bag shows as the wrapping paper.) Bring the sides of the paper up and over the loaf of bread, so that the long edges of paper are together. make several folds, about 3/4-inch in width, and continue folding until snug against the top of the loaf of bread. Unravel a fairly long length of twine, enough to wrap around the bread length-wise, width-wise, and then have enough to tie together in the middle. |

To fold bag down around the sides of the bread, gather the sides, pull in toward the middle. One side will overlap the other side. Do one side, and turn under the bread, so that the loaf of bread is sitting on the tab. Fold the other side, and turn under. |

Turn over the loaf of bread. Hold the tabs together. Now, turn over the loaf of bread so that it is sitting on both turned under tabs. |

Lay the string over the top, down the middle, length-wise. Leave plenty of string on either side so that you'll be able to draw it under the loaf, and then up and over the middle toward the top of the loaf again. |

Holding the string firm against the sides, turn over the loaf of bread. Pull the string snuggly toward the middle of the loaf, cross the string, and then pull it over the sides of the loaf (back toward the top of the loaf). |

Bring the string back to the top of the loaf, turning over the loaf as you go. Now tie the string in the middle. (I like to loop the ends under the string that runs length-wise, so that the whole string gets held together nicely.) |

Now, loop a gift card onto one end of the string, and
tie the string in a bow. There you have it! A "...brown paper package, tied up with string..." The lucky recipient of this gift will love both the wrapping---and what's inside.
